Add checkpoints and branching

A checkpoint is a scene that asks the learner a question. When the scene ends, the video pauses on its last frame and shows your answer buttons. Each button jumps to another scene or opens a web page.

Someone who watched cannot be shown to have learned. Someone who answered can.

  1. On the canvas, select the scene that asks the question.

  2. In the scene panel, set Story role to Question.

  3. Open the Interactivity section.

  4. Select Add option and type the answer text, for example Clip on before you climb.

  5. Under Choose target, pick where this answer goes:

    • A scene: the learner jumps to that scene and carries on from there.
    • External URL…: a web page opens in a new tab, and the video carries on to the next scene.
  6. For the right answer, tick This is the right answer.

  7. Repeat for each answer. A scene can have up to six options.

The template from New Training already has a Question scene wired to a Wrong and a Right scene, so you often only need to change the words.

Point a wrong answer back to the scene that teaches the fact, not to a dead end. The learner sees the step again, then gets another go at the question.

You can also mark scenes with the Correct and Incorrect story roles. The target picker shows these roles next to each scene, so it is easy to wire answers to the right place.

  • The score is the share of questions the learner got right, as a percentage.
  • If a learner goes back and answers a question again, their latest answer counts.
  • Only answers that jump to another scene are scored. A link to a web page is not an answer.
  • Scores reach your LMS when you export the module as SCORM. The share link records which answers were clicked, but not who clicked them.

Render the module, then share it and select Play. Try each answer and check it lands where you expect.

A branch that points at a scene with no rendered video skips ahead to the next rendered scene.
